HLI celebrates 20 years!
In 2026, HLI proudly celebrated 20 years of leadership, service, and community impact. To mark this milestone, a special 20-year luncheon brought together supporters, alumni, partners, and friends to reflect on HLI’s history and the meaningful work made possible over the past two decades. Just a few projects that came from HLI:
2010:
- The Brain Bus established a mobile technology lab to serve low-income neighborhoods by helping students retain math and reading skills during summer vacations. This project is still ongoing.
- The Community Foundation of Henderson was established as a non-profit service to house endowments for various non-profits to encourage some of the wealth being transferred from one generation to another to be applied toward the public good. Also, they distribute some investment gains to local charities.
- Bank on Henderson made available low or no-cost checking accounts with no minimum balance at local banks to help encourage people to avoid costly cash advance/ payday loan services and pawn shops. This program also provided one hour long money management classes for participants.
- Compassion Henderson was a project focused on spreading positive messages through the community. This group spread handwritten Post-It notes throughout Henderson County High School to inspire students, faculty, and staff.
- The Bike Share Project installed bike racks in three locations in the community from which residents and visitors could check out bikes with an app from their phone, then return it to one of the bike rack stations when they are done using them for the day.
- The Juneteenth Celebration participants work with other community members and organizations to organize an observance in Downtown in Henderson of the federal holiday on June 19th each year that commemorates the emancipation of the African-American slaves.
- This initiative has worked to incorporate "Welcome to Henderson, KY" signage on new overpasses that have been constructed on Interstate 69 for Airline Road as well as Kimsey Lane. This group also designed and secured financing for a 21-foot long Henderson selfie spot that has been developed at a scenic spot on the Henderson riverfront.
- The East End- The Next Chapter project group is devoted to the East End with their mission being to bring neighbors together and celebrate the East End community though art and shared purposes. Their initiative came to life in three phases: one, preserve the Welcome to East End sign; two, a community paint by number mural; and three, an annual East End scholarship.
